No Permitted Activities and Itiems in Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is an invaluable Peruvian cultural heritage site. Any damage to the area or its structures will result in penalties and possible legal consequences. In this article, we outline the regulations that all visitors must follow.

1. Backpacks larger than 40x35x20 cm (15.7×13.7×7.8 inches) are not allowed. If you bring one, it must be stored in a locker for an additional fee.

  • Carrying food or kitchenware outside the backpack is prohibited.
  • Entry is denied to those under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Possession of alcoholic beverages or illegal substances is strictly forbidden.

2. Use of umbrellas and similar items (consider a waterproof coat, sun hat, or dark glasses based on the weather);

  • Tripods
  • Selfie sticks, and related accessories.

3. Animals of any kind (except guide dogs for the visually impaired) are prohibited.

  • Aerosols are not allowed.
  • Using cell phones in narrow sections is not permitted as it causes congestion
  • Please use them in wider areas.
  • All types of musical devices and sources of noise pollution are also banned.

4. Entering with high-heeled shoes or any footwear lacking a soft sole is prohibited.

  • Baby carriages are also not allowed.

5. Knives and similar weapons are prohibited.

  • Additionally, billboards used for advertising or activism are not allowed.
  • Noise-making, shouting, and participating in rallies or protests are also forbidden.

6. Any damage to the site’s

  • lithic structures
  • flora and fauna is strictly prohibited.
  • Additionally, social activities that do not align with the site’s historical significance, such as partying, are not allowed.
  • Lewd behavior is also completely forbidden.

7. Using walking poles without soft rubber tips can be problematic mainly along the Inca Trail.

For disabled individuals or elders, it’s advisable to use walking canes equipped with proper rubber tips.

8. Smoking or using e-cigarettes, lighting any type of fire, and disposing of garbage improperly (please bring small plastic bags) are strictly prohibited.

Additionally, selling products and feeding animals in or around the site are not allowed.

9. Commercial filming or photography, as well as shoots in hazardous locations, are prohibited.

  • Additionally, flying paragliders
  • Drones, or similar aerial devices over Machu Picchu are not allowed.

10. Accessing the citadel through concealed, prohibited paths is unlawful.
