Itinerary

DAY 1: CUSCO – MANU CLOUD FOREST

Our journey begins with an early departure from Cusco, setting the stage for an exciting adventure ahead. Our first stop takes us to Oropesa, famously known as the bread capital of Peru. Here, we’ll explore the town’s rich history, enjoy its amenities, and have the chance to support the local community by purchasing freshly baked goods and refreshments.

Continuing onward, we’ll travel approximately 30–40 minutes to reach Laguna Huacarpay, a national heritage site and thriving wetland ecosystem. This area is a haven for wildlife, offering a glimpse into the natural beauty of the Andes. Visitors can marvel at the diverse bird species, including the Giant Hummingbird (*Patagona gigas*), the endemic Bearded Mountaineer (*Oreonympha nobilis*), Puna Ibis (*Plegadis ridgwayi*), Cinereous Harrier (*Circus cinereous*), and more. With its stunning lakeside scenery and vibrant biodiversity, Laguna Huacarpay provides a captivating introduction to the region.

As we continue our journey through the Andes, we ascend into the breathtaking Cloud Forest, an extraordinary and unique environment that promises unforgettable views. Along the way, we’ll stop at Paucartambo, a historic village that played a vital role during the Inca Empire. We’ll also visit the Acjanaco ranger station, where we’ll immerse ourselves in local culture while taking in panoramic vistas. Keep your eyes peeled for incredible birdlife, such as the Andean Flicker (*Colaptes rupicola*), Variable Hawks (Geranoaetus polyosoma), Quetzals, and many other avian species.

Our day concludes with an overnight stay at a lodge nestled in the heart of Manu’s Cloud Forest. This will be a unique opportunity to witness Peru’s national bird, the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (*Rupicola peruvianus*), as it performs its mesmerizing mating display at its lek site. Depending on our arrival time, this incredible sighting may take place either in the late afternoon or the following morning. This marks the perfect ending to a day filled with culture, nature, and unforgettable experiences.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included

Accommodation: Either Cock of the Rock Lodge, Paradise Lodge or Wayquecha Biological Station

DAY 2: MANU CLOUD FOREST – MANU LEARNING CENTRE

Begin your day with an early departure to the town of Salvación, followed by a journey to Aguanos. From there, embark on a 15-20 minute walk along a scenic trail to reach our private motorized canoe. Glide down the breathtaking Madre de Dios River, en route to the Manu Learning Centre.

As you make your way, the river comes alive with wildlife. Spot majestic Herons, elegant Egrets, swift Cormorants, vibrant Kingfishers, and Flycatchers, along with Birds of Prey soaring above. With a bit of luck, you might even catch a glimpse of a Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) or a Lowland Tapir (Tapirus terrestris), two semi-aquatic creatures that frequent the area.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you’ll be welcomed and introduced to your accommodation. Take some time to rest and settle in after your journey. Meanwhile, the gardens buzz with life—watch colorful garden birds like Tanagers and Barbets flit by, and spot lizards such as the Golden Tegu (Tupinambis teguixin) basking in sunny patches. One of the garden’s highlights is its abundance of Hummingbirds drawn to the snake vines. Look out for species like the Rufous-crested Coquette (Lophornis delattrei), the Golden-tailed Sapphire (Chrysuronia oenone), the White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora), and many more.

After a delicious lunch, immerse yourself in the rainforest by exploring the trail system with our experienced naturalist guides or take in the stunning landscape from our viewpoint. As evening falls, deepen your knowledge of the jungle through an engaging introductory presentation, or simply unwind with a serene sunset before retreating to your comfortable overnight stay at the Manu Learning Centre lodge.

At dinner, you’ll have the opportunity to formally meet the Manu Learning Centre community, including staff, volunteers, and interns. During this gathering, you’ll also be briefed on the exciting itinerary planned for the following day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included

Accommodation: Manu Learning Centre

DAY 3 – 4: MANU LEARNING CENTRE – CONSERVATION PROJECTS

Our first survey of the day is usually the Colpa (Clay Lick) Monitoring, we perform this first thing in the morning before sunrise. Travelling five minutes up river to land on a beach, positioning ourselves in the best position to watch the numerous members of the Psittacidae (Macaws, Parrots and Parakeets) bird family fly across the river to engage in gathering nutrients and social activities. Returning afterwards for breakfast.

Spend the rest of the day getting involved with our numerous long-term conservation projects and joining our researchers in their work while you enjoy the beauty of nature. Our Projects include Pitfall traps and Visual Encounter surveys (VES performed at night) for monitoring reptiles and amphibians, Terrestrial in Line Transect surveys for monitoring birds and mammals at sunrise and sunset, and Butterfly traps.

All with the purpose of monitoring the population and diversity levels across the 3 regenerating forest types found within the reserve, helping determine the value of regenerative land and providing opportunity for species recovery. (Survey participation will vary depending on the schedule)

In the evening there is an opportunity to head out on a night walk inside the forest, if you’re feeling brave enough! Pass through the wetlands to see many different kinds of insects, amphibians and reptiles, potentially even our resident Smooth-Fronted Caimans (Paleosuchus Trigonatus) with an opportunity to see more of the nocturnal mammal species.

After a discovery day, you can enjoy another overnight stay within our comfortable Manu Learning Centre lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included

Accommodation: Manu Learning Centre

DAY 5: COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Embark on a journey across the river to the charming town of Salvacion, where you’ll have the opportunity to connect with the beneficiaries of our impactful community projects. On the way, we’ll stop at Machuwasi, a beautiful wetland heritage site. Here, you’ll board locally crafted rafts for a peaceful birdwatching experience, culminating at a scenic mirador (viewpoint) that offers stunning views of the wetlands.

From Machuwasi, we’ll continue to the town center to meet one of our beneficiaries. Together, we’ll contribute to the upkeep of a Biogarden, ensuring the community has access to fresh vegetables, or plant trees as part of our Agroforestry initiative, supporting sustainable local development.

As the day winds down, we’ll return to the Manu Learning Centre, where you can relax and reflect on the day’s meaningful experiences. For those seeking more adventure, an optional night walk is available. You’ll spend the night at our comfortable lodge, surrounded by the serene natural beauty of the center.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included

DAY 6: MANU LEARNING CENTRE – CUSCO

The next morning, after breakfast, we will board the boat back to Aguanos and take a short walk to our private bus. Along the way, you’ll have one last chance to soak in the sights and sounds of the enchanting rainforest before we begin the journey back to Cusco. Expect to arrive at your hotel around 7:00 PM after a direct drive with any necessary stops. This marks the end of the tour, but the unforgettable memories of Manu will stay with you forever.

OPTIONAL: DAY 12 – 13 – TREK TO RAINBOW MOUNTAIN OR EXTEND YOUR TRIP

Prepare for an unforgettable adventure as you embark on a trek to the stunning Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain. This hidden gem, often referred to as the “painted hills,” offers a breathtaking journey through snow-capped peaks, dramatic desert landscapes, vibrant mineral hues, and herds of alpacas.

Your day begins with an early 6:00 AM departure, followed by a scenic three-hour drive through traditional villages and panoramic views of the Andes, arriving at the trailhead at 15,000 feet in the heart of the Vilcanota Mountain Range. From here, you’ll begin a gradual ascent through a colorful valley and a unique stone forest on your way to the summit.

At the peak of the mountain, you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the surrounding Andean landscape, including the majestic Ausangate Glacier, towering at 21,000 feet. This glacier, one of the most sacred peaks (Apus) in Incan culture, adds a sense of wonder to an already extraordinary experience. Keep an eye out for wildlife, as this is one of the few places in Peru where you can spot wild vicuñas and Andean camels alongside llamas and alpacas. You’ll have ample time to soak in the stunning scenery, take photos of the vibrant mineral-streaked hills, and embrace the serene beauty of the region.

The descent will be unhurried, with opportunities to pause and appreciate the landscape before returning to Cusco. Back at your boutique-style hotel, you’ll have the evening free to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventure.

Logistic

Tour Logistics: “The Manu Legacy Traveller 6D/5N This tour is a multi-day expedition that requires careful planning and logistics to navigate the challenging terrain of the Andes and the remote Amazon rainforest. Here’s a breakdown of the typical logistics involved:

1. Transportation:

  • Road Travel (Cusco to Atalaya): The tour begins with a long overland journey from Cusco. A private bus or a similar comfortable vehicle is used to travel from the high-altitude city of Cusco, through the Andes, and down into the cloud forest. This is a full-day trip with stops at scenic viewpoints and small towns.
  • River Travel (Atalaya and Beyond): The road ends at the Atalaya river port. From there, all subsequent travel is by motorized canoe. These boats are the primary means of transportation within the Amazon, allowing access to the lodges, oxbow lakes, and the deep Reserved Zone of Manu National Park.
  • Return Trip: The return journey follows the same route in reverse—a boat ride back to Atalaya and then a bus trip back to Cusco.

2. Accommodation:

  • Lodges: Accommodation is a mix of lodges. The first night is typically spent in a lodge in the cloud forest. The following nights are spent in lodges deeper within the rainforest. Lodges can vary, but generally offer shared or private rooms with private or shared bathrooms. Some may have hot water and limited electricity/Wi-Fi, especially in the more remote areas.
  • Lodge Types: Some tours may use specific eco-lodges, such as those run by indigenous communities (like Casa Matsiguenka), which provide a more authentic and community-focused experience.

3. Meals & Provisions:

  • All-inclusive: This type of tour is generally all-inclusive once you’ve been picked up in Cusco. This means all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are provided, usually prepared by a professional cook.
  • Dietary Needs: Most tour operators can accommodate various dietary requirements, such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, but this must be requested in advance.
  • Water: Mineral water is typically provided throughout the tour to ensure safe hydration.

4. Guide & Staff:

  • Professional Guides: A professional, bilingual (English and Spanish) naturalist guide is a crucial part of the experience. They lead the walks, provide information on the flora and fauna, and ensure the safety of the group.
  • Support Staff: A cook and a boat driver are essential members of the team, handling food preparation and transportation.

5. Group Size:

  • Small Groups: Tours of this nature are generally conducted in small groups, with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 7-9 people. This allows for a more intimate experience and better wildlife viewing.

6. Health & Safety:

  • Vaccinations: Recommended vaccinations for the Amazon include yellow fever, and it is wise to consult a doctor about other travel vaccinations.
  • Insect Repellent: A strong insect repellent with a high percentage of DEET is highly recommended due to the presence of mosquitoes.
  • First-Aid: Guides carry a basic first-aid kit, but it is essential for travelers to bring their own personal medications.

What to Pack

Clothing: Pack light, quick-drying clothing in neutral colors (darker colors can attract more insects). Long-sleeved shirts and long pants are essential for sun and insect protection.
Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots are necessary for jungle trails. You may also want sandals or flip-flops for the lodge.
Rain Gear: A lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho is a must, as rain showers are common even in the dry season.

Other Essentials:

Sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
Binoculars (highly recommended for wildlife spotting).
Camera with extra batteries and memory cards.
Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries.
Reusable water bottle.
Personal toiletries and any specific medications.
Small backpack for day trips.
Copy of your passport and other travel documents.

Important Notes:

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date.
A comprehensive Travel Guide, including hotel details, Packing Tips, and additional information, will be provided to help you prepare for your unforgettable journey.

This trip requires a minimum of 4 Travelers, Please confirm that your trip is guaranteed before booking airfare.

Prepare for the adventure of a lifetime!

Activity Level

The activity level for a “The Manu Legacy Traveller 6D/5N” tour is generally considered
moderate. It is not an intense trekking expedition, but it does require a reasonable level of physical fitness and mobility.

Here’s a breakdown of what that means:

Road and River Travel: A significant portion of the tour involves sitting in a bus or a motorized canoe for long periods. The road journey from Cusco is long, and the river travel can be a full-day affair. This aspect requires patience and the ability to handle bumpy roads and boat travel.

Jungle Walks:

The core of the wildlife viewing experience is through guided jungle walks. These are typically at a slow, deliberate pace, but they take place on uneven, muddy, and sometimes slippery terrain. You’ll be walking for a few hours at a time, both during the day and on optional night walks.

No Technical Skills Required: You don’t need any special climbing or trekking skills. The trails are not at high altitudes (except for the initial drive from Cusco), and the goal is to observe, not to conquer difficult terrain.

Physical Demands:

Ability to walk for several kilometers on uneven ground.
Good balance and a sure footing on wet and slippery paths.
Tolerance for high heat and humidity.
Ability to get in and out of a canoe.

Not Suitable For:

Individuals with severe mobility issues.
Those who require a wheelchair or other mobility aids.
Individuals with serious heart conditions or back problems, as the terrain can be challenging.

In summary, this tour is designed for people who enjoy nature and are physically able to handle the unique conditions of the rainforest. It’s an active trip, but the focus is on observation and discovery rather than physical endurance.

FAQ’s

Can you do tours of the Amazon rainforest?

Yes, tours of the Amazon rainforest are a popular and incredible way to experience its unique biodiversity. Peru is one of the top destinations for Amazon travel, with several key access points, including Manu, Iquitos, and Tambopata. Tours are a necessity for most visitors, as they provide experienced guides, transportation, accommodation, and the necessary permits to enter protected areas.

Can you visit Manu National Park?

Yes, you can visit certain parts of Manu National Park and the surrounding areas. The park is divided into several zones:

Cultural Zone: This is the buffer zone surrounding the park, where most lodges and local communities are located. Most tours start here and offer an authentic, albeit less pristine, jungle experience.

Reserved Zone: This is a highly protected area of the park with strictly controlled access. Only a limited number of authorized tour operators can enter with a permit, making it an exclusive and truly remote experience with a very high chance of seeing wildlife.

Core Zone: This is a completely restricted area reserved for scientific research and indigenous communities living in voluntary isolation. Tourists are not permitted to enter this zone.

Is Manu or Iquitos better?

The choice between Manu and Iquitos depends on your travel style and what you want to see.

Manu: Is known for its incredibly high biodiversity and remote, pristine environment. It offers an “Andes to Amazon” experience, with a journey that takes you through the cloud forest and into the lowland jungle. It is generally more expensive and requires a longer, more adventurous journey from Cusco. It’s the top choice for serious wildlife enthusiasts and those seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience.

Iquitos: Is more accessible, with direct flights from Lima. It is known as the “gateway to the Amazon” and offers a wider range of tour options, including luxury river cruises. It’s a great option for those with less time or a tighter budget. It is particularly famous for its pink river dolphins and is the hub for tours to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.

How much does a tour of the Amazon rainforest cost?

The cost of an Amazon tour varies greatly depending on the destination, duration, level of comfort, and the specific tour operator. For a multi-day tour to Manu National Park, you can expect prices to range from around $800 to over $1,500 USD per person for a 6-day/5-night trip. Tours to the Reserved Zone are generally more expensive due to limited access and permits.

What is the best Amazon tour?

The “best” tour is subjective and depends on your interests. For an unparalleled wildlife experience, deep immersion, and a journey through diverse ecosystems, a tour to the Manu Reserved Zone is often considered the gold standard. For those with less time or a desire for a more accessible trip, tours from Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado (Tambopata) are also excellent choices. The quality of your experience often comes down to the tour operator and the expertise of your guide.

Do Amazon warehouses give tours?

No, Amazon warehouses do not give tours as they are a logistics and fulfillment operation and are not set up for public visits.

Is Manu National Park worth visiting?

Yes, for many travelers, Manu National Park is absolutely worth visiting. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The journey itself, from the Andes to the Amazon, is a highlight. The opportunities to see rare wildlife like giant river otters, macaws, and potentially even jaguars are unparalleled. It’s a prime destination for serious nature lovers, birdwatchers, and those seeking a truly immersive jungle adventure.

Is it worth going to the Amazon in Peru?

Yes, Peru’s Amazon rainforest is a fantastic destination. It is one of the most accessible and wildlife-rich parts of the Amazon. The country offers a variety of options to suit different budgets and interests, from the remote and pristine Manu to the more developed tourist hubs of Iquitos and Tambopata. The combination of easy access from major cities and incredible biodiversity makes it a top choice for travelers.

Can you stay in Manu National Park?

Yes, you can stay in lodges within the different zones of the park. Most tours include accommodation at eco-lodges or more rustic-style camps within the Cultural or Reserved Zones. These lodges are specifically designed to provide an immersive experience while minimizing environmental impact. Staying overnight is essential to experience the full range of the rainforest, including its incredible nocturnal activity.
