Activity Level
1. The Lares Trek Section (Days 1–3): Challenging
The difficulty on the Lares side comes primarily from the high altitude and the need to conquer a major mountain pass.
Altitude: You will reach high altitudes, often around $4,400$ to $4,750$ meters ($\approx 14,400$ to $15,580$ feet) at the highest pass. This demands proper acclimatization (2-3 days in Cusco/Sacred Valley is mandatory).
2Terrain: The trails are generally rougher and less manicured than the Inca Trail, involving long uphill climbs, particularly to the high passes, and long descents.Daily
Distance: You will be trekking for approximately 6–8 hours per day.
2. The Short Inca Trail Section (Day 4): Moderate
This is a single, demanding day of classic Inca Trail hiking, but it is less grueling than the full four-day route.
Distance: Approximately $10 \text{ km}$ ($\approx 6.2 \text{ miles}$).
Terrain: The trail is well-defined, featuring original Inca stone steps, including the famous and challenging climb to the Wiñay Wayna ruins before reaching the Sun Gate.
Time: You will hike for about 6 hours with breaks, ending the day by entering Machu Picchu.

FAQ’s
1. What is the difference between the Lares Trek and the Classic Inca Trail?
The Lares Trek is a cultural immersion trek. It is less crowded, involves interaction with local Andean communities, and focuses on the beautiful, remote Lares Valley. The Classic Inca Trail is a historical trek, famous for its Inca ruins and entry via the Sun Gate. This 5D/4N tour offers the best of both: the solitude and culture of the Lares route, followed by the iconic Short Inca Trail (Km 104) to enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.
2. Is this tour a good alternative if the Classic Inca Trail is sold out?
Yes, absolutely. It is widely considered the best alternative. Since the majority of the hike is on the Lares route (which does not require a permit), and we only use the limited Short Inca Trail (Km 104) permit for one day, it is far easier to secure your spot while still achieving the dream of entering Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate (Inti Punku).
3. Will I get to see Machu Picchu at sunrise?
Yes. On Day 4, you will hike the Short Inca Trail and enter Machu Picchu in the late afternoon for a sunset view. You will then stay overnight in Aguas Calientes. On Day 5, you will take an early morning bus back up to the citadel to enjoy the classic sunrise view and a full guided tour before the main crowds arrive.
4. How difficult is the Lares Trek and Short Inca Trail 5D/4N tour?
The tour is rated as Moderate to Challenging. The primary difficulty is the altitude on the Lares section, where you cross passes up to $4,750$ meters ($\approx 15,580$ feet). The trekking itself requires a good level of fitness, as you will hike 6–8 hours daily.
5. How can I avoid altitude sickness (Soroche)?
Acclimatize: Spend at least 2–3 full days in Cusco ($3,400 \text{ masl}$) or the Sacred Valley before starting the trek.
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water (not just coffee or alcohol) leading up to and during the trek.
Pace Yourself: Walk slowly and steadily. Mañana (tomorrow) is a key word on the trek!
Medication: Consult your doctor about taking prescription altitude medication (like Diamox) or using local remedies like coca leaves or Soroche pills.
6. Do you carry oxygen or first-aid supplies?
Yes. All of our guides are extensively trained in wilderness first aid and carry a comprehensive first-aid kit, including a portable oxygen tank, which is available for emergency use at all times on the Lares route.
7. When should I book this tour?
While the Lares Trek portion doesn’t require an advance permit, the Short Inca Trail (Km 104) portion does. We recommend booking 3–6 months in advance, especially if you wish to travel during the high season (May to September), as the short trail permits are limited.
8. Are the Short Inca Trail and Machu Picchu permits included?
Yes. The tour price includes both the Short Inca Trail permit (for the Km 104 hike) and the Machu Picchu General Entrance Ticket for the guided tour on Day 5. We handle the purchase and necessary booking logistics.
9. Will I need to bring cash?
Yes. We recommend bringing Peruvian Soles (PEN) for:
Tipping your guides, porters, and chef (customary and appreciated).
Buying snacks, water, or drinks from local communities along the Lares route.
Souvenirs and personal expenses in Aguas Calientes.
