Inca Trail in February: Why It’s Closed and What to Do Instead

by Tour Leaders Peru | Sep 2, 2026 | Blog Post

Is the Inca Trail Closed in February?

The Inca Trail is closed for the entire month of February, every year, on both the classic 4-day route and the Short 2-Day Inca Trail. Peru's Ministry of Culture shuts down the whole trail network from February 1 through February 28 for erosion control and maintenance. It then reopens on March 1. If you are set on hiking the actual Inca Trail, February is the one month to plan around. However, Machu Picchu itself never closes, and two real alternative treks, Salkantay and Lares, run permit-free all year, including in February.

This guide covers exactly why the trail closes, what happens during the closure, whether you can still reach Machu Picchu this month, and the best trek to book instead. This is important if February is the only time you can travel.

Guided Trek, Open All Year

Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu

5 days, 4 nights, small groups of 2 to 8, permit-free so it runs every month including February, wild high-altitude scenery instead of Inca stonework, all meals and Machu Picchu entrance included.

Lares Trek to Machu Picchu

4 days through Andean villages and weaving communities rarely seen by tourists, permit-free so it runs every month including February, a genuinely different, more cultural route than the Inca Trail.

Two other permit-free routes are worth knowing about. The Choquequirao Trek is a tougher, more remote hike to a Machu Picchu-scale ruin that sees a fraction of the visitors. Additionally, the Inca Quarry Trail is a shorter alternative that still finishes at Machu Picchu.

February Weather in the Sacred Valley

Even though you won't be on the Inca Trail itself, February weather still shapes whatever alternative you pick. Expect daytime highs around 63°F (17°C) and nights near 42°F (5°C). You can also expect roughly 119mm of rain spread across about 13 rain days. This is generally the wettest stretch of the year in this region. Pack the same way you would for any rainy-season trek: a real waterproof shell, quick-drying layers, and waterproof boots. For the full month-by-month breakdown, see our Inca Trail weather by month guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hike the Inca Trail in February at all?

No. The entire Inca Trail network, including the Short 2-Day Inca Trail, closes from February 1 through February 28 every year for maintenance. There are no exceptions and no permits are issued for any Inca Trail route during this window.

When does the Inca Trail reopen?

March 1, every year, once the annual maintenance work is finished.

Is Machu Picchu closed in February?

No, only the Inca Trail closes. Machu Picchu itself stays open all year, including February, you just reach it by train and bus instead of on foot via the Inca Trail.

What is the best alternative trek to do in February?

Salkantay and Lares are the two strongest options. Both run on a separate permit system from the Inca Trail so neither one closes, and both finish at Machu Picchu. Salkantay is the better fit if you want dramatic high-altitude mountain scenery. Lares is best if you want more cultural immersion in Andean villages along the way.

Still Want Machu Picchu in February?

The Inca Trail is closed, but Salkantay and Lares are not. Talk to us about which route fits your dates and fitness level.
