The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

The classic 4-day Inca Trail trek reaches its highest point at 4125 masl (13,500 ft.), a point known as the pass of the dead woman in the central mountain range of the Andes. From there, the trail descends to 2,500 masl, leading to the Inca city of Machu Picchu. Experiencing the approach to this city, especially from an elevated vantage point, is an awe-inspiring experience. With a stroke of luck, you can watch as the mist disperses to reveal the majestic Inca city of Machu Picchu, as seen from the Sun Gate.

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is recognized as one of the world’s premier treks. As you descend from the Andes into the beginning of the Amazon jungle where Machu Picchu resides, you’ll encounter astounding Inca and pre-Inca constructions that bear testament to an ancient, rich civilization.

If the 4-day Inca Trail is fully booked, the Short Inca Trail is a recommended alternative. This trail forms part of the Classic Inca Trail and offers views of three Inca sites, including Chachabamba, Wiñaywayna, Intipata, and, of course, Machu Picchu.

Alert for Adventurers: Book Your Inca Trail Permit Early for 2024-25

Attention all adventure enthusiasts! The spaces for entering Machu Picchu via the iconic Inca Trail will go on sale in October, a clear three months before 2023. As these permits are known to sell out months in advance, we usually recommend securing your slot a good 8 months before your planned hike.

However, with availability released earlier than usual this year, those wishing to reserve a spot on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu anytime in 2023 – 24 should act promptly and reserve as soon as possible. Bear in mind, that the number of reservations for the Inca Trail each day is capped at 500 hikers only. However, this includes trekking support teams, which usually comprise around 300 people, leaving only 200 slots for adventurers. Therefore, if you plan to be one of those lucky 200 entering Machu Picchu on the Inca Trail each day, act swiftly and book your permit early.
