What we like: A classic leather boot with great traction and comfort.

The Lowa Renegade GTX is a tried-and-true leather hiking boot that’s been on the market in one form or another for years. And although it’s not as light or breathable as some of the newer designs, this boot hits the sweet spot in terms of comfort, traction, and durability—making it a great choice for everything from short day hikes to extended backpacking trips. Our Advice:

Great stability on rocky and rooty terrain; waterproof yet breathable upper

What we like: The most comfortable boot in our review and great traction on all surfaces.

What we don’t: A bit on the pricey side and not as supportive as some of the competition.

The La Sportiva Wildcat 2.0 GTX is a relatively new offering from the Italian brand, and it quickly became one of our favorite trail running shoes. This low-top model has a comfortable yet performance-oriented design, with a waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex liner, protective toe cap, and sticky FriXion XT outsole. The result is a shoe that feels great right out of the box and provides ample traction on everything from hardpacked dirt to wet rocks.

In terms of stability, the Wildcat 2.0 GTX is top-notch. The low-profile design keeps you close to the ground, and the TPU shank provides just enough rigidity underfoot. We also appreciate the toe cap, which protects your foot from debris and roots on the trail. The only issue is that the shoe is on the expensive side at $140, but we think it’s worth the investment for serious runners.

Best Hiking Boots For Backpacking

Arc'teryx Acrux TR GTX Boot Men's | Trekking Boot for Technical Trails

$334.95 Compared to $359.00*

Arc'teryx Acrux TR GTX Boot Men's | Trekking Boot for Technical Trails

Product Details

  • Best Use: Backpacking, mountaineering, and expedition use
  • Footwear: Height Low-top
  • Footwear: Closure Lace-up
  • Waterproof: Yes
  • Type of Waterproofing: Gore-Tex
  • Upper Leather/textile/synthetic
  • Lining: Gore-Tex
  • Midsole: Dual-density EVA foam
  • Footbed: Ortholite 3D
  • Support: TPU shank and plate
  • Outsole: Vibram MegaGrip rubber
  • Weight (Pair)1 lb. 15.0 oz. (men), 1 lb. 13.2 oz. (women)
  • Gender: Men's & Women's

Our Advice: A lighter, more agile option for backpacking and mountaineering

What we like: Very light for a boot, waterproof Gore-Tex liner.

What we don’t: Lacks the support of a true hiking boot.

The Arc’teryx Acrux TR GTX is a unique boot in that it mixes the lightweight feel of a trail runner with the support and protection of a backpacking boot. Weighing in at just over 1 pound per pair, the Acrux TR is one of the lightest boots in our review. And while it doesn’t have the high-top height or burly build of a boot like the Arc’teryx Bora2 Mid, it still offers a Gore-Tex waterproof liner and a TPU shank for added support on uneven terrain.

The result is a versatile boot that can handle a wide range of backpacking and mountaineering terrain. The low-cut height keeps the Acrux TR agile on technical trails, and the Gore-Tex liner keeps your feet dry in wet conditions. But because it doesn’t have the same stiff build as a traditional hiking boot, the Arc’teryx Acrux TR isn’t quite as stable on rough terrain.

  •  Stack height: 25 mm

Our Advice: A lightweight, waterproof option with a wide toe box and stone plate protection

What we like: Very comfortable right out of the box.

What we don’t: Not as breathable as some other membranes.

The Altra Lone Peak 4.0 Mid RSM is a sleek and stylish update to one of our favorite day hiking boots. The biggest change for this version is the addition of a waterproof eVent bootie, which gives the Lone Peak protection from wet conditions without sacrificing too much breathability. Altra also kept the comfortable fit and wide toe box that we love in the previous model, and they added a stone plate under the forefoot for extra protection on Rocky terrain. All told, the Lone Peak 4.0 Mid RSM is a great choice for day hikes and weekend backpacking trips...Read an in-depth review. See Men's Altra Lone Peak

Hiking Shoes

There is no single perfect shoe for hiking, and the best choice for you will depend on a number of factors including the type of terrain you'll be tackling, the climate, and your personal preferences. However, all hiking shoes share some common features that make them ideal for hitting the trails. Here are some of the things to look for when choosing a hiking shoe:

Sturdy construction with leather and/or durable nylons

Rubber toe caps for protection from obstacles

Medium-stiff midsoles for support

Outsoles designed for traction on various types of terrain

When selecting a hiking shoe, it's important to consider the type of terrain you'll be spending the most time on. If you're mostly hiking on well-maintained trails, a shoe with a less aggressive tread pattern will be fine. However, if you'll be doing any off-trail hiking or tackling rougher terrain, a shoe with a more aggressive tread pattern is a better choice.

Climate

the climate is also a factor to consider when choosing a hiking shoe. If you're hiking in a warm climate, a shoe with more breathability is important to help keep your feet cool and dry. In a colder climate, a shoe with less breathability but more insulation will help keep your feet warm.

Finally

personal preference plays a role in selecting the best hiking shoe. Some hikers prefer a shoe with a lot of cushioning, while others prefer a more minimalist shoe. It's important to try on different styles and brands of hiking shoes to seeing what feels best for you.

Once you've found the perfect hiking shoe for your needs, it's important to take care of them so they'll last for many hikes to come. Be sure to clean them after each hike, and allow them to air dry completely before storing them.

You should also inspect your shoes regularly for any signs of wear and tear, and replace them when they start to show too much wear. With proper care, your hiking shoes will be ready to hit the trails with you for many years to come.

Trail Running Shoe category

Trail running shoes are designed for, you guessed it, running on trails. They tend to be lighter weight than traditional hiking shoes and have a more flexible sole that helps with traction on uneven surfaces. They also typically have less ankle support than hiking shoes, so they're not the best choice for carrying a heavy backpack. Thru-hikers on popular trails like the PCT and AT love these shoes for their lightweight design and comfortable fit.

Designed for running on trails, trail running shoes are lighter weight than traditional hiking shoes and have a more flexible sole. However, they're a great choice for hikers who want lightweight shoes for moving quickly on established trails.

Waterproof for The Best Hiking Shoes

If you hike in wet conditions often or just want the peace of mind of knowing your feet will stay dry no matter what, waterproof hiking shoes are a great option. These shoes are made with waterproof materials like Gore-Tex and have taped seams to keep water out. They're also typically equipped with drainage ports or gussets to help water escape if it does happen to get in. While waterproof hiking shoes will keep your feet dry, they don't breathe as well as non-waterproof shoes and can make your feet sweat more.

Waterproof hiking shoes are a great choice for hikers who want to be sure their feet will stay dry in wet conditions. However, they don't breathe as well as non-waterproof shoes and can make your feet sweat more.

Hiking Boots

For longer hikes carrying a heavier backpack, or for difficult trails with lots of elevation gain, hiking boots are a good choice. These boots tend to be the heaviest and most supportive option, with a stiffer sole that provides good traction and support. They're also typically the most expensive option. If you don't need extra support or weight, a lighter-weight trail shoe or hiking shoe will be more comfortable and easier to hike in.

Hiking boots are the heaviest and most supportive option for hikers and provide good traction and support. However, they're also typically the most expensive option.

What to Look for When Buying Hiking Shoes

Now that you know the different types of hiking shoes available, what should you look for when making your purchase?

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

- Fit: Hiking shoes should fit snugly without being too tight. They should also be comfortable from the start, with no need to break them in.

- Support: Make sure the Best Hiking Shoes you choose to provide enough support for your needs. If you have weak ankles, for example, look for a shoe with good ankle support.

- Weight: Hiking shoes can range from very lightweight to very heavy. Choose the weight that's right for you based on the type of hiking you'll be doing.

- Waterproofing: If you hike in wet conditions often, choose a waterproof shoe.

Approach Shoes - Climbing Shoes

The third option has a relatively narrow focus: climbers or hikers that need to tackle steep rocky terrain. Many rock climbers will use an approach shoe on the hike in (hence, “approach” name), and swap out for their true climbing shoes when going gets vertical. Approach shoes are easy-to-spot because they have large rubber toes and as well a sticky low-profile compound underfoot which provides maximum grip off the stone.

These types also include crossovers like La Sportiva TX4 -but aren't typically recommended daily drivers due to their lack of comfort while scrambling+/- Elevation changes. If your day hikes do however include a lot of scrambling or low-grade rock climbing, an approach shoe would be an excellent choice.

The Weight of Your Best Hiking Shoes Is Very Important.

Weight is an important consideration when choosing hiking shoes. The lighter the shoe, the easier it will be to hike in. However, lighter shoes may not provide as much support or durability as heavier shoes. Choose the weight that's right for you based on the type of hiking you'll be doing.

Hiking Shoe Stability and Support.

As a reflection of the push for lighter gear in all facets, hiking shoes are moving away from the traditional stiff construction of a hiking boot in favor of flexibility and a nimble feel. All hiking footwear (excluding some minimalist trail runners) does retain a degree of stiffness thanks to built-in shanks or internal supports. These features are part of what separates a hiking shoe (and approach shoe) from a super flexy cross trainer or road-running shoe.

For day hikes on flatter or less technical terrain, we can’t recommend a lightweight and semi-flexible hiking shoe enough. Shoes like the Merrell Moab 3 and Keen Targhee Low are standouts for these uses. As your trips get longer and your pack gets heavier, a more substantial shoe still wins out for us. Look to the Salomon X Ultra 4 and Arc'teryx Aerios FL 2 GTX for great all-around options that are equally adept at conquering summit peaks and multi-day backpacking.

Waterproofing

Waterproofing in a hiking shoe is achieved in one of two ways: a waterproof/breathable membrane (Gore-Tex, eVent, etc.) or a water-resistant coating. The former is found on all of the major brands’ shoes and offers the best protection against wet weather. A Gore-Tex or eVent-lined shoe will usually be more expensive than its non-waterproof counterpart but is worth the investment if you hike in wet conditions often.

A water-resistant coating, on the other hand, offers less protection against precipitation but is often more breathable than a waterproof/breathable membrane. This makes it a good choice for hot and dry conditions. Shoes with a water-resistant coating will usually be less expensive than those with a waterproof/breathable membrane but won’t hold up as well in wet weather.

If you hike in wet conditions often, choose a waterproof shoe. If you hike mostly in dry conditions, choose a shoe with a water-resistant coating or no waterproofing at all.

The breathability of The Best Hiking Shoes

Breathability is an important consideration when choosing hiking shoes. The more breathable the shoe, the less sweaty and uncomfortable your feet will be in hot weather. However, less breathable shoes may not provide as much protection against wet weather. Choose the level of breathability that's right for you based on the type of hiking you'll be doing.

Waterproof/breathable membranes, such as Gore-Tex, are not as breathable as non-waterproof materials. This means that your feet will be more likely to sweat in hot weather. However, waterproof/breathable membranes provide better protection against wet weather. If you hike mostly in dry conditions, choose a shoe with a water-resistant coating or no waterproofing at all.

Shoes with a lot of mesh and thin fabrics will be more breathable than those with thicker, more durable fabrics. This makes them a better choice for hot weather hikes. However, they may not provide as much protection against abrasion and punctures. Choose the level of breathability that's right for you based on the type of hiking you'll be doing.

Lacing System - Hooks and Eyelets

If you are looking for a good lacing system, we recommend the Salomon XA Pro 3D. This shoe has a quick lace system that is easy to use and provides a secure fit. The Adidas Terrex Swift R2 also has a quick lace system, but we found it to be less secure than the Salomon. The La Sportiva Bushido II has a more traditional lacing system, but we found it to be just as effective as the quick lace systems.

Salomon XA Pro 3D, Adidas Terrex Swift R2, La Sportiva Bushido

Hiking Shoes Materials

Nylon

One of the most common materials used in hiking shoes, nylon is known for being tough and abrasion-resistant. It also has a good stretch, which makes it comfortable to wear. Nylon is often used in the toe box and heel counter of shoes to provide structure and support. Shoes made entirely of nylon are usually less expensive than those made with other materials.

Mesh

Mesh is a lightweight, breathable fabric that is often used in the upper of trail running shoes. It allows your feet to stay cool and dry in warm weather and can be combined with other materials to create a more breathable shoe. However, the mesh is not as durable as nylon or leather and is more likely to tear.

Leather

Leather is a durable material that is often used in the toe box and heel counter of hiking shoes. It provides structure and support but can make shoes feel heavy and stiff. Leather is also less breathable than mesh, so your feet may get sweaty in warm weather. Shoes made entirely of leather are usually more expensive than those made with other materials.

Water-Resistant Materials

Some shoes have water-resistant or waterproof materials in the upper to help keep your feet dry in wet weather. This can be helpful if you hike in rain or snow, but it's important to note that these materials are not as breathable as non-waterproof materials. This means that your feet will be more likely to sweat in hot weather.

Gore-Tex

One of the most common waterproof materials used in hiking shoes, Gore-Tex is known for being breathable and durable. It is often used in the toe box and heel counter of shoes to provide protection against water and abrasion. Shoes made with Gore-Tex are usually more expensive than those made with other materials.

eVent

Another waterproof material used in hiking shoes, eVent is known for being highly breathable. It is often used in the upper of trail running shoes to keep your feet cool and dry in warm weather. However, eVent is not as durable as Gore-Tex and is more likely to tear.

Hiking Shoe "Sole" Materials

The material used in the sole of your hiking shoe will determine its traction, durability, and comfort. Below, we spell out the pros and cons of the most common materials used for hiking footwear soles.

Rubber

One of the most common materials used in hiking shoe soles, rubber is known for being lightweight and flexible. It provides good traction and is often used in the outsole of trail running shoes. Rubber is also relatively durable, but it can break down over time and is not as abrasion-resistant as other materials.

EVA

EVA is a lightweight, foam-like material that is often used in the midsole of hiking shoes. It provides cushioning and support but can break down over time. EVA is also not as durable as other materials and does not provide as much traction.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane is a stiff, durable material that is often used in the midsole of hiking shoes. It provides support and stability but can make shoes feel heavy and uncomfortable. Polyurethane is also not as breathable as other materials and does not provide as much cushioning.

Hiking Shoes Toe Protection

One of the most important features to look for in a hiking shoe is toe protection. This is especially important if you hike in rugged terrain or are likely to stub your toes on rocks and roots. The toe box of your shoe should be made of a durable material like leather or nylon and have a reinforced toe cap.

Conclusion

There is no one perfect hiking shoe for everyone, but there are certainly plenty of great options on the market. We've also discussed some of the key features to look for when making your purchase, so you can be sure to find the perfect pair of hiking shoes for your needs. Happy trails!
