Our excursion starts very early in the morning. We’ll pick you up from your hotel at 4:00 am and will drive for 3 hours to the starting point of the walk. While we make our final preparations before starting, our chef will be preparing the delicious and nutritious breakfast that will give you all the energy you need to face this adventure. Before starting the tour, pay attention to our guide who will share with you details of today’s itinerary, as well as safety tips that will serve you for the following days. We’ll start this impressive and little-known walk in a green valley from where you can appreciate the majestic Ausangate Mountain in the distance. Along the way you’ll observe several peasant communities and discover the deep connection with nature that characterizes the Andean culture. Hundreds of alpacas and llamas will watch your every step!
We’ll continue our journey to the first pass known as Pukaqocha (4,870 m / 15,977 ft). From there you’ll enjoy an impressive panorama: the crystal clear waters of the Pukaqocha Lagoon and the gigantic Ausangate Mountain right in front of you. You’ll see how the waters of the lagoon originate in the snows of this sacred glacier. Without a doubt, it’s a show that will awaken all your senses. Don’t forget to charge your camera!
After a short break we’ll go for 2 hours to Anantapata where we’ll stop for lunch. Once we have recuperated our energy, we’ll ascend for 3 hours until we reach the highest point of the route called Abra Minasniyuc or warmisaya pass (4,985 m / 16,354 ft). After enjoying this gem from the Peruvian Andes, we’ll begin our trek towards the spectacular Red Valley. A place that seems to be taken from another planet and that’s visited by very few tourists. It only takes 30 minutes of walking to reach the viewpoint from where you will get the best views of the valley.
Finally, we’ll make a 1,5-hour descent between ancient Andean communities and herds of llamas. Activity Level
The two-day Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain Trek is the most efficient yet grueling route to the summit. Given its condensed timeframe, relentless physical demands, and extreme altitudes—peaking at 5,100 meters (16,732ft)—this journey is classified as Difficult to Extreme. Rigorous preparation is vital for a safe and rewarding expedition.
1. Mandatory Acclimatization
Early Arrival: You must arrive in Cusco (3,350m / 10,990ft) at least three to four days before your trek begins.
The Rationale: This itinerary involves an abrupt ascent. Proper acclimatization is the most critical safety measure you can take to mitigate the risk of severe altitude sickness.
Pro Tip: Spend your time in Cusco resting, hydrating, and engaging in light activities, such as exploring the Sacred Valley, to prime your body for the trek.
2. Physical Conditioning
Required Fitness: High-level cardiovascular health and exceptional endurance are non-negotiable. The days are long, and the thin air significantly amplifies the physical strain.
Preparation: We recommend a consistent training regimen—including running, weighted hiking, and strength training—for several months leading up to your departure.
3. Essential Logistics
Documentation: You must carry your original, valid passport (matching the one used for your booking) throughout the journey.
Overnight Conditions: Prepare for a night of sub-zero camping. This exposure is essential to position you for an early morning ascent to the Vinicunca summit.

FAQ’s
What is the Ausangate Trek?
The Ausangate Trek is a high-altitude mountain circuit in the Vilcanota Range of the Peruvian Andes, located approximately 100km southeast of Cusco. Unlike the Inca Trail, this trek does not lead to Machu Picchu; instead, it circumnavigates the sacred Apu Ausangate (6,384m / 20,945ft), the highest peak in the Cusco region. It is famous for its “Rainbow Mountains,” glacial lakes, and traditional Quechua-speaking alpaca herding communities.
Why Trek Ausangate with Tour Leaders Peru?
As the creators of Tour Leaders Peru Adventure, we don’t just lead tours; we curate life-changing expeditions. Unlike the crowded Inca Trail, Ausangate offers a raw, spiritual connection to the “Apu” (Sacred Mountain).
Local Mastery: 100% Peruvian-owned and operated with deep roots in the Ocongate and Pitumarca communities.
Safety First: Our guides carry oxygen, satellite phones, and specialized high-altitude first aid kits.
Sustainable Travel: We follow strict Leave No Trace principles to protect the Vilcanota mountain range.
How difficult is the Ausangate Trek?
The Ausangate Trek is classified as strenuous to difficult. While the terrain is not technically “climbing,” the challenge lies in the sustained high altitude.
Elevation: You will spend the majority of the trek above 4,000m (13,123ft).
Passes: Most itineraries involve crossing multiple passes higher than 5,000m (16,400ft), such as Palomani Pass.
Conditioning: Hikers should be in excellent physical shape and have prior experience with multi-day trekking.
How long is the Ausangate hike?
A standard Ausangate circuit typically takes 4 to 6 days to complete, covering approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles).
The 5-Day Circuit: This is the most popular option, allowing for a steady pace and time to visit the 7 Lagoons and Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca).
The 7-Day Extended Trek: Includes deeper exploration into the Sibinacocha Lake region for those seeking total isolation.
Is the Ausangate Trek worth it?
Absolutely. For hikers who prefer solitude over crowds, Ausangate is often considered superior to the Inca Trail.
Scenery: It offers some of the most diverse landscapes in Peru—from neon-blue glacial lakes to red desert mountains and massive ice walls.
Culture: You encounter authentic Andean culture where locals still wear traditional dress and maintain ancient customs.
Flexibility: Because permits are not restricted like the Inca Trail, it is easier to book last-minute or customize your route.
Can you do the Ausangate Trek without a guide?
Yes, it is legally possible to trek Ausangate without a guide, but it is not recommended for most hikers.
Navigation: Trails can be faint and easily obscured by snow or fog.
Safety: There are no permanent ranger stations or medical facilities on the route.
Logistics: Managing pack horses, high-altitude cooking, and emergency oxygen is complex. Hiring a local expert like Tour Leaders Peru ensures your safety and supports the local economy.
Should I be worried about altitude sickness in Peru?
You shouldn’t be “worried,” but you must be deeply prepared. Altitude sickness (AMS) can affect anyone regardless of fitness level.
Prevention: The golden rule is to spend at least 2–3 days in Cusco (3,399m) before starting the trek.
Symptoms: Watch for persistent headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, or shortness of breath.
Hydration: Drink 3–4 liters of water daily. At high altitudes, your body loses moisture much faster through respiration.
Why does coca tea help with altitude?
Coca tea (mate de coca) has been used by Andean cultures for millennia to combat “soroche” (altitude sickness).
The Science: Coca leaves contain alkaloids that act as a mild stimulant and vasodilator. This helps increase heart rate and improve oxygen uptake in the blood, which compensates for the lower oxygen pressure at high altitudes.
How to use: Drink 1–2 cups in the morning, but avoid it late at night as the stimulant effect can interfere with sleep.
Do I need a permit for the Ausangate Trek?
Unlike the Inca Trail, Ausangate does not require a government permit. However, entry fees are paid directly to local communities to support their conservation efforts.
What should I pack for the Ausangate trek?
You need professional-grade cold-weather gear. Essential items include a 0°F rated sleeping bag, waterproof trekking boots, thermal layers, a down jacket, and high-SPF sun protection.
Is Rainbow Mountain included in the Ausangate Trek?
Yes, our 4-day and 5-day itineraries specifically include a sunrise visit to Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) and the Red Valley, allowing you to see these landmarks before the day-trip crowds arrive.
