Introduction
Embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Andes with Tour Leaders Peru. The Ausangate 7 Lakes day trek is more than just a hike; it is a profound pilgrimage to the feet of the sacred Apu Ausangate, the most powerful mountain deity in the Cusco region. Unlike standard tours, our experience is meticulously crafted to connect you with the soul of this landscape, its people, and its ancient traditions.
Our philosophy is simple: we don’t just guide you through a trail; we lead you on a journey of discovery, ensuring safety, comfort, and an authentic cultural connection that will stay with you long after you leave the mountains.
The Tour Leaders Peru Difference: A Journey, Not Just a Trek
What makes our Ausangate 7 Lakes tour unique?
Authentic Cultural Connection: Our guides, many from the local Ausangate communities, will facilitate a genuine Pachamama (Mother Earth) offering ceremony with coca leaves, a tradition passed down for centuries. You won’t just witness culture; you’ll participate in it.
Expert, Local Leadership: You are led by our “Tour Leaders”—highly trained, certified professionals in high-altitude first aid, fluent in English, Spanish, and Quechua. Their deep knowledge of the local mythology, geology, and ecology transforms a beautiful walk into a compelling story.
Andean Culinary Experience: Forget basic trail food. Our dedicated trekking chef prepares a delicious, multi-course Andean fusion lunch using fresh, local ingredients, served in a comfortable dining setting, allowing you to refuel and savor the flavors of Peru.
Uncompromised Safety & Small Groups: We operate with small groups for a more intimate and personalized experience. Every tour is equipped with an extensive first-aid kit, an emergency oxygen tank, and a satellite phone. Your well-being is our absolute priority.
Responsible & Sustainable Tourism: We are committed to the communities we work with. We ensure fair wages for our muleteers and staff, pack out everything we bring in, and contribute to local projects. By traveling with us, you are supporting the preservation of this pristine environment.
Highlights of the Trek
The Seven Turquoise Lakes: Witness the breathtaking spectacle of the seven glacial lakes—Pucacocha, Jatun Pucacocha, Viracocha, Huchuy Pucacocha, Otorongo, Q’omercocha, and Pataqocha—each with its own unique hue, from emerald green to deep turquoise.
The Majesty of Apu Ausangate: Stand in awe of the snow-capped peak of Ausangate (6,384 m/20,945 ft), the powerful guardian spirit that dominates the horizon. Our guides will share the legends and significance of this sacred mountain.
Vibrant Andean Landscapes: Hike through stunning valleys painted in mineral tones of red, ochre, and lavender, reminiscent of the nearby Rainbow Mountain region, but without the crowds.
Rich Flora and Fauna: Encounter large herds of llamas and alpacas grazing freely. Keep an eye out for the elusive vicuña (a wild relative of the alpaca), vizcachas (a type of chinchilla), and the mighty Andean Condor soaring above.
The Pacchanta Hot Springs: Conclude your challenging hike with a well-deserved, relaxing soak in the natural thermal baths of Pacchanta, with spectacular views of the Ausangate massif.

What is the difference between Salkantay and Ausangate?
Salkantay or Ausangate: Which Trek to Pick in Peru?
The Salkantay Trek is a popular route to get to Machu Picchu, so you’ll come across more hikers on the trail, but not as many as the famous Inca Trail. On the other hand, the Ausangate trek is less crowded, giving you a quieter and more secluded experience in nature.
How many days do you need for the Ausangate trek?
To fully appreciate the trek, most tour companies suggest allocating a minimum of 5 days, or 6 if you plan to visit Rainbow Mountain. The hike takes place at an average elevation of 13,000 feet (4,000 m), making it crucial to allow yourself ample time for completion. Taking periodic breaks along the way will significantly reduce the risk of experiencing altitude sickness.
