Hiking Trail To Machu Picchu

5 Reasons for a 5-Day Machu Picchu Trek

A 5-day Inca Trail hike is an alternative trek to Machu Picchu. It typically involves more time on the trail, fewer crowds, and less strenuous daily mileage compared to the standard 4-day trek. This longer version includes an extra day for acclimatization and explores more of the Inca ruins along the path. It culminates with an entrance into Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). The extra day also allows for two visits to the Machu Picchu citadel, often experiencing it first at sunset and again the next morning.

What to expect

  • Itinerary: Your journey begins at Km 82, taking you past ancient Inca sites like Llactapata and Phuyupatamarca. There are scenic campsites along the way before reaching Machu Picchu. On Day 5, enjoy a guided tour of the citadel, followed by a train ride back to Cusco.
  • Highlights: Expect a less crowded trail, discover more secluded Inca sites, and soak in stunning vistas from high passes. This includes Dead Woman's Pass (Warmiwañusqa), the trek's highest point.
  • Comforts: Enjoy amenities such as private campsites, freshly prepared meals by a dedicated support team, and porters for your belongings. Your final night is spent in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes, the vibrant town below Machu Picchu.
  • Accessibility: This trek is rated moderate to difficult, with the highest point reaching approximately 13,780 feet (4,217 m).
  • Best Time: The dry season is from May to September. The 5-day version is particularly enjoyable, offering fewer crowds on the trail.

Why choose a 5-day trek

  • More Time: An extra day offers a more relaxed pace and improved acclimatization, minimizing altitude sickness risk.
  • Deeper Exploration: This extended journey enables deeper exploration of the fascinating archaeological sites along the trail.
  • Fewer Crowds: Experience quieter sections of the trail by choosing the extended trek.
  • Two Machu Picchu Visits: Entering through the Sun Gate on day four offers a breathtaking initial glimpse. This is followed by a comprehensive guided tour of the citadel on day five.

1. A More Manageable Pace

The classic 4-day and 5-day treks follow the exact same route, but the experience is worlds apart. The primary advantage of the 5-day journey is the way it redistributes the daily hiking distances. Instead of rushing from one point to another, you can savor every moment.

The most challenging section of the Inca Trail is the second day. It involves ascending to the highest point of the trek, Dead Woman's Pass, at 4,215 meters (13,829 feet). On the 4-day itinerary, this is a grueling, non-stop push. On the 5-day trek, this day is broken down. You will still face the challenge of the high pass. However, the overall 5 day Inca trail distance for each day is more manageable. This allows your body more time to acclimatize to the altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness and increasing your overall enjoyment.

A more relaxed pace means you arrive at camp each day with enough energy to appreciate your surroundings, rather than collapsing in your tent. You can sit, sip coca tea, and watch the clouds roll over the mountains, fully present in the experience.

2. Explore More Incan Sites

One of the most compelling reasons to choose the 5-day trek is the extra time you get to explore the remarkable Incan sites scattered along the trail. These archaeological treasures are often overshadowed by the grand finale at Machu Picchu. Yet, they are spectacular in their own right.

With the extended itinerary, you can explore ruins that 4-day trekkers often have to rush past. These include the beautiful sites of:

  • Sacsaymarka: A beautifully preserved fortress perched on a cliff, offering stunning views.
  • Intipata: A set of agricultural terraces that seem to cascade down the mountainside.
  • Wiñay Wayna: Often hailed as one of the most beautiful sites on the trail, Wiñay Wayna (meaning 'Forever Young') features intricate stonework, a series of ritual baths, and impressive agricultural terraces. On the 5-day trek, you have ample time to wander through this magical site without feeling rushed.

This additional time allows you to truly appreciate the genius of Inca engineering and architecture. It turns your hike into a moving museum tour through the Andes.

3. Experience Superior Campsites

Where you rest your head at night can dramatically shape your trekking experience. The 5-day Inca Trail itinerary grants access to some of the most beautiful and less crowded campsites. This offers moments of tranquility that are hard to find on the busier 4-day route.

The undisputed highlight is camping at Phuyupatamarca, located at 3,630 meters (11,906 feet). The name translates to "Town Over the Clouds," and it lives up to its name. Positioned on a ridge, this campsite offers world-class, panoramic views. Watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and pink over the Urubamba River valley is a moment you will never forget. Waking up to a sunrise that illuminates the surrounding peaks is equally magical.

These quieter campsites allow for a deeper connection with nature. You can stargaze without light pollution and fall asleep to the gentle sounds of the mountain. This lets you fully immerse yourself in the Andean wilderness.

4. Two Visits to Machu Picchu

Perhaps the most significant advantage of the 5-day trek is the opportunity to visit the citadel of Machu Picchu not once, but twice. This dual-visit approach completely transforms your experience of this sacred site.

On the afternoon of the fourth day, you will arrive at Machu Picchu through the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku). This first glimpse of the lost city, bathed in the golden light of the late afternoon, is breathtaking. Because most of the crowds from day-trippers have already left, you can enjoy a more serene and personal first encounter. You'll have time to take those classic, postcard-perfect photos without swarms of people in the background.

After this magical introduction, you will take a bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes for a well-deserved hot shower, a delicious dinner, and a comfortable night in a hotel bed. The following morning, you will return to Machu Picchu for a full guided tour. Refreshed and rested, you can explore the citadel's temples, palaces, and homes with fresh eyes and a deeper appreciation for its history and significance. Given the new time restrictions at Machu Picchu, this two-visit strategy is, indeed, the best way to maximize your time at one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

5. A More Authentic and Immersive Journey

By choosing the 5-day Inca Trail, you are opting for depth over speed. This journey is not a race to the finish line; it’s an opportunity for cultural immersion and personal reflection. The slower pace allows for more meaningful interactions with your guides and porters. They can share their deep knowledge of the local culture, history, and environment.

You have more time to notice the small details. This includes the unique flora and fauna, the way the light changes on the mountains, and the intricate stonework of the trail itself. This extended timeline allows for a more profound connection to the land. It immerses you in the ancient civilization that once thrived here. It transforms the trek from a physical challenge into a holistic and spiritual journey.

Your Path to Machu Picchu Awaits

The journey to Machu Picchu is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. While any trek along the Inca Trail is memorable, the 5-day Inca Trail hike offers a richer, more immersive, and ultimately more rewarding experience. By taking an extra day, you give yourself the gift of time—to explore, to absorb, and to connect with the magic of the Andes.

If you’re ready to embark on an adventure that balances physical challenge with deep cultural immersion, the 5-day trek is the perfect choice. Explore our expertly guided itineraries and start planning your journey into the heart of the Inca Empire today.
