FAQ’s
Altitude Sickness Wil Afect My Tour?
Altitude sickness is a common experience for visitors arriving in Cusco, situated 11,000 ft (3,430 m) above sea level. While age does not influence the severity of symptoms, overall fitness can play a role. Symptoms vary from person to person and may include:
Headaches
Nausea
Insomnia
Fatigue
Loss of appetite
Even those in excellent health may feel mild effects, making it important to prepare and acclimatize properly.
How To Treat Altude Sickness?
Treatments may include:
Here are a few ways to manage the symptoms of altitude sickness:
Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers: Bring your preferred brand from home to help with headaches.
- Oxygen: Most hotels keep oxygen tanks in the lobby, and some local pharmacies sell personal-sized tanks.
- Coca Leaf Tea: Locals believe drinking coca tea helps alleviate symptoms. You’ll find it readily available in hotel tea bars and restaurants.
- Water: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Dehydration can thicken your blood and increase discomfort.
- Diamox (Acetazolamide): This medication can be purchased with a prescription in some Western countries or bought over the counter in Peruvian pharmacies.
While these treatments can help ease symptoms during the initial 24-48 hour adjustment period, the feeling of breathlessness may not disappear completely. In rare cases, medical attention may be necessary. There are clinics located in Cusco for this purpose.
Is it safe to drink the water in Cusco and Machu Picchu
Tap water is a daily staple in Lima, Cusco, and other larger cities, but is it safe for travelers? To err on the side of caution, we recommend avoiding tap water for drinking opt for bottled water, which is inexpensive and widely available even in small towns and villages.
To help reduce plastic waste, we encourage you to support the Travelers Against Plastic initiative by bringing a water purification device. Choose a device designed to eliminate microbes and viruses—not just improve taste—so you can safely create your own drinking water.
Should still Visit Machu Picchu if I have a life-threatening allergy?
We understand that allergies range from mild to severe. If you have a life-threatening allergy to any food, insect, medication, or natural element, we require written, advance notice detailing the allergen and your treatment. Please be aware that Epi-pens are often only a temporary solution; they are most effective when you are within reach of professional medical services in cities like Lima or Cusco.
What is the best way to travel between Lima and Cusco?
We recommend flying between Lima and Cusco, as other options are either too time-consuming or impractical for short trips. There is no train service between the cities, and while buses are available, the journey takes nearly 24 hours on winding mountain roads. A fast highway does not exist. Round-trip airfare costs range from about $250 per person on domestic airlines like Star Peru and Peruvian Airlines to around $450 per person on LATAM Airlines, with Avianca Airlines priced in between. Most flights operate in the morning or early evening. We advise against booking the last flight of the day due to potential weather-related delays in the mountains.
Where should I stay if my international flight arrives in Lima in the evening?
There are no late evening flights from Lima to Cusco, and only one hotel is located at the Lima airport. The Wyndham Hotel is connected to the arrivals terminal via a skybridge on the second floor, making it a quick 2-minute walk from the terminal to the lobby. The hotel is expensive by Peruvian standards, costing over $250 per night for a double room. However, discounts can sometimes be found on Booking.com or Expedia. The hotel allows up to three guests per room but does not accommodate four.
This hotel is ideal for travelers arriving in Lima late at night and flying out again the next morning. For those planning to stay in Lima, arranging a transfer to a hotel outside the airport is usually a better option. Negotiating a rate on your own at the airport can be expensive and unreliable. Travel time to most hotels in the city is about 45 minutes each way in moderate traffic, with transfer costs starting around $35 each way. Larger groups (more than three people) may need to arrange transportation in a minivan or multiple taxis.
Do I need vaccinations to visit Machu Picchu?
At Machu Picchu’s altitude of 8,000 ft (2,440 m), disease-carrying insects rarely survive. Therefore, US passport holders do not require Yellow Fever vaccinations or Malaria prophylactics for the highlands. However, if your adventure extends to the Amazon Rainforest—including Tambopata or Manu National Reserve—vaccination is recommended by health authorities.
We also advise checking entry requirements for any subsequent destinations or your return home. Bolivia requires a Yellow Fever certificate for jungle travel, and countries like Australia may mandate proof of vaccination simply because you have visited Peru. This hotel is ideal for travelers arriving in Lima late at night and flying out again the next morning.
